Mr Motter, you often speak about “goTOzero Impact Logistics.” How close is Volkswagen Logistics to achieving this?
Motter: When discussing sustainability in overland transport, we must face up to the fact that around 95 per cent of our emissions in the transport network are currently caused by trucks. As a result, if we want to achieve our climate goals – by which I mean the climate goals of the entire Group – we must tackle this directly. Rail transport is the most energy-efficient mode of overland transport. For each tonne moved, diesel locomotives generate lower CO2 emissions than diesel trucks – and when powered by electricity or green electricity, the ratio is even better. But we must be realistic: rail transport is not always an option because not every parts supplier has a rail siding or can get a rail siding. That’s why there is no alternative to electric trucks on the roads.
