Information on the EU Regulation “EU Data Act”

Data is created, constantly and everywhere. Our vehicles also generate and send data. We use this general data for numerous data-based products and services that support your fleet management. In order for you to continue to benefit from this offer, we require your express consent. This is how the EU regulates it in the EU Data Act.

In accordance with the EU Data Act, as a manufacturer of networked products and services, we are obliged to create a legal basis (End User Licence Agreement) with you as a user of these services. The EU Data Act enters into force on 12 September 2025.

In order for the MAN Lorry & Bus SE (MAN T&B) to continue to offer you digital services and other data-based products and services, we are obliged under the EU Data Act to conclude an additional agreement that allows us to process vehicle data that we need to provide these services. You can obtain this agreement via the RIO Portal and the MAN sales organisation.

Your decision makes the difference

Make the right choice and avoid unnecessary disadvantages. Without your consent to data processing, the following restrictions apply to you:

Without your consent, data-based services such as MAN ServiceCares can no longer be used. Problems are detected later, maintenance requirements are no longer proactively reported. This increases the risk of unplanned downtimes and can reduce the operational readiness of your vehicles.

Faults can only be analysed remotely with approval of the vehicle data and prepared for the workshop visit. If this information is missing, longer repair and downtimes will occur.

Without complete data, it is difficult to trace a warranty claim. This leads to longer processing times, numerous queries and additional documentation.

Our digital services are based on your vehicle data. Without consent, we may not use this data and must switch off services that have already been booked.

1. Access to data

According to the European Data Act, data access is provided by MAN Lorry & Bus SE in cooperation with Volkswagen Group Info Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG. You can also find detailed terms of use and other options for data products for specific purposes (fleet, non-captive leasing, etc.) on this specific website.

MAN Truck & Bus customers can submit data requests for their MAN Truck & Bus fleet and share data with third parties.

Depending on the vehicle or existing RIO registration, there are different ways to request vehicle data:

  • For MAN customers (including trucks and buses) with an existing RIO account and activated MAN vehicles, the data request can be made directly via the following link:

    A login is required; user groups such as administrators and fleet managers have access rights.
  • MAN customers with networked products (e.g. Trucks & Buses with RIO Box) who are not yet registered on RIO, please follow the following steps to self-register on the RIO platform:
  • MAN customers with special applications (e.g. MAN engines) and MAN Van customers with a RIO box (TBM3), please contact RIO Support via the form.

Please note that the data query for MAN Van customers (TGE) is carried out via Volkswagen Group Info Services (VW GIS) and is therefore different from the process for Truck & Bus customers. Further information on this can be found under point 3. Vans.

In general, the formats for the above data types are the following:

  • CAN frames

Estimated volume:

MAN networked products offer different versions and customisation options. The generally estimated volume of data generated in our networked products depends to a large extent on the individual vehicle parameters (including, but not limited to, version, equipment, type of use, modifications, digital service bookings).

b) Data generation

All types of networked products are able to generate data continuously and in real time.

c) Data storage

Networked products store data on board and are able to send data to backends. The retention period of the collected data depends on the type of data and the use case. Data can be stored on the current backends for up to 10 years.

User types

The EU Data Act defines different types of users, each with specific rights and obligations in relation to data access and management. Whether you are a private individual, company, third party, or government agency, your role determines how you can interact with and use generated data.

A private individual who owns a connected vehicle, has a contractually transferrable right of use or uses a corresponding service.

Your rights and options:

  • Request your data: Receive a copy of your historical vehicle data
  • Individual data access: Select specific data points to access or share
  • Allow third parties access: Grant third-party access to certain data
  • Manage consents: Check and change your approvals in the “Brands” ID Portal

4. Body manufacturers

As part of the EU Data Act, you as a customer also have the right to obtain information from body manufacturers about the data generated or processed by their systems.

As the MAN Lorry & Bus SE does not usually have direct access to this data, please contact the body manufacturer directly to assert your rights under the EU Data Act.

5. Authorities and public bodies

Requests from public bodies in accordance with Art. 14 et seq. EU Data Act

Who can request it?

The public authorities, the European Commission, the European Central Bank and EU institutions are eligible to request the information.

 

What requirements must be met?

In accordance with Section 15 Para. 1 of the Data Act, proof is required of an exceptional need to use certain data in order to perform tasks in the public interest. This applies particularly in the following cases:

1) Public emergency (Section 15 Para. 1(a)

2) Fulfilment of a legally prescribed task without an emergency (Section 15 Para. 1(b)

How can requests be made?

Request in accordance with Section 14 et seq. EU Data Act must be submitted via the official portal:
