Stationary gas engines in marine use

The Dutch shipyard Concordia Damen will build the enormous number of 40 new Parsifal inland waterway barges by the end of 2024. MAN Engines plays an important role in this process and is supplying 80 MAN E3262 gas engines. The 12-cylinder engines are installed in gensets from the Dutch partner MAN Rollo. In combination with electric motors, each two of the gas engines, which deliver a total of 990 kW, form the hybrid drive of the low-emission tankers.

MAN Engines solutions for EGA

In order to comply with the most important global directives, MAN Engines offers its customers numerous and flexible solutions for reducing emissions. From exhaust gas recirculation to diesel particulate filters and SCR systems, MAN Engines and its partners have a wide range of options for exhaust gas aftertreatment.

Hydraulic valve clearance adjustment

MAN is developing a maintenance-free valve train for industrial engines and is relying on the use of hydraulic valve clearance adjustment. A maintenance-free valve train eliminates the need to check and adjust the valve clearance. Additional customer benefits arise from the elimination of disassembly and maintenance activities, as well as flexible use of the installation space above the cylinder head.

MAN Engine D1556 LE5xx

MAN’s 9-litre diesel engine for off-highway applications put to the test in an agricultural tractor. For this usage, the SCR-only combustion and exhaust gas aftertreatment have been completely revised and adapted. During testing, a large number of field cycles were analysed and the test programme was modified for the tough use in the tractor.

MAN base engine: The basis for our engines

Engines are used in a broad range of applications. And each application places very different specific demands on the motor. The MAN-developed V-engine series D2868/D2862 has successfully managed to introduce 8- and 12-cylinder engines to the market in road vehicles, agricultural machinery, trains, yachts, workboats and for power generation as diesel and gas gensets.

Naturally aspirated and turbo engines from MAN Engines

In its gas engine portfolio, MAN Engines offers a wide selection of turbocharged lean-burn and naturally aspirated engines with stoichiometric combustion. Depending on the application, each engine technology has its advantages. Whether the focus is on electricity production or the primary use of heat, MAN Engines has the appropriate solution for higher efficiency.

Milestones of agricultural technology

As a manufacturer and developer of diesel engines, MAN has been closely associated with agricultural engineering since the early 1920s. The innovative engines were initially installed in the company’s own machines – from motorised ploughs to the company’s tractors – but were later increasingly sold to other manufacturers. Today, MAN engines can be found in agricultural machinery from a wide range of manufacturers and are in particular used in areas with high demands on performance and efficiency.

MAN D26 Fendt engine

To create an engine with a minimum of 500 HP for use in a powerful standard tractor without articulated steering that complies with Tier 4 final and EU Stage IV exhaust emissions standards, the engineers at MAN based their designs on the D2676 power train for trucks, adapting this to meet the requirements of a tractor.

D2676 LE621 compact roof engine

The MAN D2676 LE621 engine provides the ideal conditions for the innovative drive technology of Alstom’s Regiolis railcar: Thanks to the compact installation dimensions and low weight of the vertical MAN engine, the complete drive package comprising diesel engine and generator, air filter, cooling, exhaust, electrical and electronic systems can be arranged on the roof of the vehicle. The improved access considerably simplifies servicing while at the same time, the end-to-end low floor section realised inside the vehicle noticeably improves passenger comfort.

The MAN hybrid drive for the “Vision Of The Fjords”

The “Vision of the Fjords” is a futuristic sightseeing catamaran in carbon construction by the Norwegian shipyard Brødrene Aa AS. It received the “Ship of the year Award” from the Norwegian ship magazine “Skipsrevyen” at the fair SMM 2016 in Hamburg. Basis of the groundbreaking parallel hybrid drive is a 12-cylinder diesel engine from MAN Engines in each of the two drive units.

The MAN Engines modular exhaust gas aftertreatment system is characterised by its high flexibility and extreme compactness, which is particularly advantageous for the varying and space-critical installation situations on workboats. The MAN Engines engineers have achieved this trend-setting result by means of freely positionable components and thus the most diverse variants of the EGA.

MAN engines in wood gas CHP units

In times of nuclear and coal phase-out, the question of a safe and clean energy supply is increasingly in the focus of power producers. MAN Engines has been offering solutions in this sector for decades, supplying CHP manufacturers with robust, clean gas engines. The use of special gases such as biogas and sewage gas has proven to be particularly sustainable and popular. But with wood gasification, a lesser-known technology has recently come back into focus. Here, too, MAN Engines and its partners serve a still small but steadily growing market with powerful gas engines.

Modular exhaust gas aftertreatment system for biogas CHP units

The 44th German Emission Control Act (Bundes-Immissionsschutzverordnung, BImSchV) has noticeably restricted the limit values for biogas CHP unit emissions. Operators are facing particularly strict emissions limit values for nitrogen oxide (NO_x). With its modular exhaust aftertreatment system, MAN Engines has been prepared for the new limit values. The project about minimising NO_x emissions during biogas CHP unit operation has been carried out by the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Seebäderschiff MS Helgoland with modern natural gas drive

Three powerful twelve-cylinder gas engines were supplied for the forward-looking and environmentally friendly drive of the MS Helgoland ferry. In cooperation with MAN Rollo in the Netherlands, the MAN E3262 engines were used to produce three 480 ekW generator sets, which also play a key role in the LNG (liquid natural gas) drive concept of the MS Helgoland.

MAN D2676: six-cylinder engine for yachts and work boats

The D2676 marine engine developed by MAN Engines is based on the D26 engine and provides an optimal, compact, low-consumption engine with a low performance weight for use in boats.
