MAN Front Detection

The close range directly in front of the truck or bus is difficult or impossible to see. This makes it dangerous for people to move there on foot or by bicycle – especially in busy and hectic urban traffic. MAN Front Detection provides a remedy by detecting road users in a range of 0.8 to 3.7 m in front of the truck or bus in moving-off situations and at low speeds of up to 10 km/h. In this case, the system, consisting of two radar sensors integrated in the bumpers and a video camera behind the windscreen, issues a visual and acoustic warning in the truck or bus: In the case of an object in the monitoring area in front of the stationary truck or bus, a coloured area in front of the vehicle is shown in the instrumentation display. If the truck or bus is driving and Front Detection detects an object in the monitoring area, the coloured area in front of the vehicle shown in the instrumentation display flashes, an acoustic warning signal also sounds. Front Detection supplements the Emergency Brake Assist EBA Plus, which only becomes active from above 10 km/h (see below).

MAN Emergency Brake Assist (EBA Plus)

Collision prevented: Until now, the MAN Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) only monitored vehicles that are in the driving corridor of their own vehicle or are moving in the same direction, and initiated an automatic braking intervention until full braking in an emergency. The third generation MAN EBA Plus also detects other road users, such as pedestrians or cyclists, from a driving speed of 10 km/h, who are not directly in the lane ahead of the truck or bus, but could potentially cross it. In the event of an impending collision, the system triggers a three-stage (visual and acoustic) warning and braking cascade if the driver does not respond and also initiates a brake intervention or full braking to a standstill if necessary. The aim is to trigger a situation-mitigating reaction in the driver in order to prevent a collision or at least reduce the severity of the collision. The system is an important safety partner thanks to its high precision and reliability, especially in confusing roads, poor weather conditions and in the dark. EBA Plus works with two radar sensors integrated into the bumper and a video camera behind the windscreen. With this solution, MAN goes far beyond the legally required scope of functions.

MAN distance warning system

According to the Highway Code, the distance to a vehicle in front must generally be so large that it can be kept behind it even if it is suddenly braked. The distance warning system from MAN helps to maintain this required safety distance. After a warning, the driver can correct the distance so that more reaction time remains for unforeseen situations. For this purpose, the distance warning system determines the distance to a vehicle in front using two radar sensors integrated into the bumper and a video camera behind the windscreen. If the truck drops below the safety distance by a small amount for a short time, a coloured distance bar lights up in the instrumentation display. If the safety distance is significantly and permanently undershot, the display also shows a warning symbol and message. When Adaptive Cruise Control ACC is activated, however, no warnings are issued – in this case, the ACC function regulates compliance with the preselected distance.

MAN Turn Assist

Additional eyes for greater safety: The MAN turn assist with two radar sensors placed one above the other secures the co-driver’s side and thus a difficult-to-see area of nearly 180° in the speed range below 30 km/h. Thanks to a three-stage warning cascade including visual and acoustic signals, the driver can react to possible collisions, such as with pedestrians or cyclists, at an early stage when they approach the blind spot.

MAN SafeStop Assist

The highlight of the many new and innovative assistance systems for MAN trucks, but also for MAN and NEOPLAN buses, is the MAN SafeStop Assist. The system detects when a driver is no longer able to actively control the bus or truck for medical or other reasons. In such an emergency, the system brakes the vehicle to a standstill automatically and in a controlled manner in its own lane and secures it (hazard warning system) if the driver does not intervene despite visual, haptic and acoustic warning messages in a three-stage cascade. This can prevent serious accidents. The basis for this is the interaction of several assistance systems: MAN SafeStop uses the driving activity detection of an active lane guidance system and the Adaptive Cruise Control ACC Stop & Go functionality. With the aid of a sensor integrated in the front of the vehicle and a camera positioned behind the windscreen, the system also continuously monitors compliance with the lane as well as the distance, position and relative speed of objects in front. MAN Truck & Bus is the only manufacturer to offer the assistance system for all new coach models.

Blind spot and moving-off warning

The blind spot warning uses radar sensors to monitor the hard-to-see side area next to the vehicle and thus reduces the risk of a collision with cyclists or other road users, especially when turning. The system warns visually and acoustically and can optionally be expanded to include two-sided monitoring. At the same time, the moving-off warning checks the area directly in front of the van and helps to prevent accidents with cyclists or pedestrians when moving off at speeds up to 30 km/h. If the sensors detect a weaker road user in the danger zone, a warning is issued in three stages, visually in the side mirror and acoustically. The moving-off warning also helps the driver to detect weaker road users in the vicinity in front of the vehicle at speeds of up to 10 km/h. If it detects people in the hazard zone, a two-stage warning is issued – visually in the instrumentation and acoustically.

Turn-off assistant

When turning left over the oncoming lane, oncoming vehicles can quickly be overlooked. This is why the new turn assist monitors oncoming traffic in these situations and can help the driver to avoid frontal collisions by automatically braking in the event of impending hazardous situations. If the driver activates the turn indicator on the left, the assistant supports him at speeds of up to 20 km/h. For this purpose, the system uses radar sensors to predictively monitor oncoming traffic during the turning process. If the system detects a hazardous situation, it initiates automatic braking due to the extremely short reaction time and warns the driver at the same time to prevent turning into oncoming traffic.

Active Lane Keeping and Traffic Jam Assist

The active Lane Keeping and Traffic Jam Assist, which is only available in conjunction with ACC Stop & Go in the Cruise Assist package, helps the driver to keep the vehicle in lane. Detection of the lane boundary via camera also works based on grass scar and roadside. In the event of unintentional crossing of a lane boundary, the system warns by means of steering wheel vibration or an acoustic signal and regulates acceleration and braking processes based on the speed set by the driver or the distance to the vehicle ahead. In addition, the active Lane Keeping and Traffic Jam Assist takes over the control of steering movements by means of corrective interventions in order to keep the vehicle in lane. In a traffic jam situation, the system moves off completely automatically after braking to a standstill and automatically keeps the vehicle in the middle of the lane.

Cruise Assist Plus incl. Emergency Assist

The system helps the driver to maintain the lane, speed and distance to the vehicle in front – a useful support, especially in heavy traffic and traffic jams. This reduces the risk of veering off the road, driving off too close and rear-end collisions. For this purpose, Cruise Assist Plus combines the functions of Lane Guard, ACC Stop & Go and Traffic Jam Assist. Thanks to integrated Emergency Assist, the system also brakes automatically in emergency situations, secures the vehicle using hazard warning lights and issues an eCall. The display in the cockpit continuously informs the driver about the status of the assistance system. Cruise Assist Plus is only available for vehicles with automatic gearboxes.
