GHG quota for electric vehicles

Secure attractive additional annual revenue with your electric vehicle

The German government is promoting the reduction of COâ‚‚ via the “GHG quota” (greenhouse gas reduction quota) for battery electric M1, M3, N1, N2 and N3 class vehicles. Our partner Elli, a 100% subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, markets your GHG quota for you so you can sit back, relax and look forward to your cash premium 1.

How does it work? – get your premium in just three steps

By law, fossil fuel providers are obliged to reduce their greenhouse gases. If they do not meet the statutory requirements, they face the threat of penalty charges. Alternatively, however, the providers can also offset the emissions saved by purely electric M1, M3, N1, N2 and N3 class vehicles via GHG quota trading. This is where you come into play. If you are listed on the vehicle registration certificate as the owner of a purely electric vehicle in classes M1, M3, N1, N2 or N3, you will get a flat-rate COâ‚‚ certificate for the COâ‚‚ emissions saved. You can market this certificate to the fossil fuel providers and thereby further optimise your TCO via our partner Elli, a 100% subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group.

FAQs about the GHG quota

The greenhouse gas reduction quota is a legislative instrument that obliges fossil fuel providers to reduce greenhouse gases (=companies obliged to meet the quota). If they do not meet their requirements, they must either pay penalties or, alternatively, they can buy CO2 certificates from the owners of purely electric vehicles, which these owners receive for the CO2 saved by owning an electric vehicle. This rewards the owners of electric vehicles for saving CO2.

The owners of purely electric M1, M3, N1, N2 and N3 class vehicles as listed in the vehicle registration document are eligible for quota trading.

As the process is very laborious and companies obliged to meet the quota only buy large quantities of quotas, it is not worth marketing your quotas yourself. This is where our specialist provider Elli steps in and helps provide GHG quota marketing. Elli groups together quotas, sells these to companies obliged to meet the quota and can then pay out attractive premiums to eligible owners of electric vehicles.

All that you need to market the quota, other than personal details, bank details and the tax identification number (if you are acting as a company), is a photo of the front of the vehicle registration document. As a rule, you will get the premium within twelve weeks, depending on how it is dealt with by the German Environment Agency.

You can apply for the quota once per calendar year for the respective vehicle. The requirement for this is that the vehicle was/is registered to the respective owner for at least one day in the year. Claiming several times, for example if the vehicle changes owner, is not possible. The person who first marketed the quota for the relevant vehicle to the German Environment Agency always gets the quota for the entire year.

After concluding a GHG quota contract with Volkswagen Group Charging GmbH, the latter will deal with the certification of the GHG quota for the fully-electric vehicle registered to you as per Section 2(2) of the 38th BImSchV [Bundesimmissionsschutzverordnungen, German Federal Emission Protection Regulation] by the German Environment Agency and will then market the certified GHG quota to companies obliged to meet the quota in its own name and at its own expense. After certification of the assigned GHG quota by the German Environment Agency and confirmation thereof, you will receive the premium according to the GHG quota contract from Volkswagen Group Charging GmbH. During the term of the contract no third parties may be commissioned to market the GHG quota, and the premium as per the GHG quota contract can only be claimed once per calendar year.
