Hazards under control: MAN rear side area monitoring

Leaving the truck on narrow roads with restricted visibility poses a considerable safety risk in day-to-day transport operations. In particular, cyclists, e-scooters or other vehicles approaching from behind in the blind spot are often detected too late in the conventional rear-view mirror. MAN side area monitoring with integrated exit warning system was developed to mitigate such critical everyday situations – known as “dooring” – using predictive technology.

This assistance system comprehensively monitors the side area behind the cab using rear-facing side radar sensors. As soon as the vehicle stops and the driver wants to leave the cab, the software analyses the trajectories of traffic behind the vehicle. If an object approaches at a speed that poses a collision risk, the system responds and immediately draws the driver’s attention to the hazard.

In addition to protecting people, the system makes a tangible contribution to preventing damage. Carelessly opened doors can cause serious damage to hinges, bodywork or mirror replacement systems in urban distribution operations. The exit warning system helps to prevent such accidents. This keeps your vehicles operational and helps avoid unplanned, costly workshop downtime due to body damage.

How rear monitoring works

The system acts fully automatically in the background and monitors the sensitive area next to the truck on both sides of the vehicle:

Scanning the surroundings

The rear-facing side radar continuously scans the rear area. The system detects road users approaching from behind, along with their trajectories and speeds.

Assessing the situation

The integrated control logic filters out harmless objects in the surroundings, such as trees and other static obstacles. This allows it to identify relevant hazards, such as rapidly approaching two-wheelers or passing cars.

Issuing a signal

The system uses a two-stage warning sequence:

  • Warning level 1:
If an object is detected, a visual warning is issued in the same way as for turn assist (yellow warning corners in MAN OptiView or 1 LED in the A-pillar).
  • Warning level 2:
If a door is opened when a hazardous situation is detected, the frame in the mirror-replacement system flashes or 3 LEDs in the A-pillar flash.

Added value for transport operations

The combination of sensors and intelligent warning logic can therefore provide tangible benefits for your fleet:

  • Prevention of personal injury and property damage when opening the door or exiting.
  • Stress reduction in the cockpit: Provides noticeable relief for the driver during a hectic working day.
  • Increased transport reliability thanks to proactive accident prevention.
