MAN D30 – The new heart of the MAN truck

Soft as butter, strong as a lion

Smooth gear changes and fuel-saving at the same time: MAN has achieved just that with the new D30 PowerLion power train for its latest long-distance truck. Fuel consumption and expenses are interdependent factors, of course. Efficiency is the ideal basis for a long partnership with your truck – but naturally it also needs to be powerful and reliable, ready for your daily journeys. The gearbox also plays an important role here, making driving even more fun.

A reduction in consumption of four per cent might sound like a modest figure at first. But for a long-distance driver like Michael, who travels 120,000 kilometres a year, this translates to noticeable savings, because at current diesel prices he gets to keep a considerable amount at the end of the year. MAN promises precisely this level of efficiency increase with the new PowerLion power train, which forms the centrepiece of this new long-distance powerhouse.

The D3066 – D30 for short – is more than simply a successor to the tried-and-tested D26 and D15 engines. With an efficiency level of over 50%, it sets new standards for this metric. The engineers at MAN have optimised every aspect of the engine to get the maximum out of every drop of diesel.

For all technology fans – high-tech under the bonnet

The technology behind the new engine is impressive: the XPI injection system operates at a pressure of up to 1,800 bar and 10-hole injection nozzles atomise the fuel so finely that combustion is almost perfect. As a result, the fuel burns faster and more completely – a decisive factor in increasing efficiency.

Added to this is the optimised turbocharging that uses different charger geometries depending on the performance class (380-440 hp or 480-560 hp). Reliability is our top priority. This is an important aspect for long-distance truck drivers like Michael, because downtime ultimately means lost time and money.

The perfect duo for your everyday life: D30 and TipMatic 14

In the D30 PowerLion, the D30 always works in tandem with the new MAN TipMatic 14 gearbox. The 14-speed gearbox is not only 60 kg lighter than its predecessor, but also more efficient – and Michael can feel this first-hand in the cab.

What does this mean for your journeys and when manoeuvring?

The shifts are quick enough to be barely perceptible – so there are no noticeable interruptions in traction. With the overdrive in 14th gear, the engine revs are so low on the motorway that fuel consumption is further reduced and the background noise in the cab remains pleasantly quiet.

What is particularly ingenious is that the new MAN EasyStart anti-roll bar with creep function makes starting and manoeuvring as easy as in an automatic car. When manoeuvring, Michael can drive the vehicle with millimetre precision using the brakes alone, without having to constantly switch between the accelerator and clutch – a real boon to ease the stressful challenge of everyday driving.

Braking like a champion

When you have a lot of power, you also need to be able to brake well. The new generation of brakes delivers up to 355 kW of braking power – without any wear on the service brakes. Combined with the detachable Retarder 47, a braking torque of up to 5,900 Nm is generated.

This is an invaluable advantage on long downhill stretches. Michael can drive down mountain passes on his routes without having to touch the service brake once. And because the retarder can now be disconnected, it no longer consumes any additional fuel in normal operation, contributing further to the overall efficiency of the vehicle.

And as a side note ...

lower consumption naturally also means fewer CO₂ emissions. The double SCR exhaust gas after-treatment ensures clean exhaust gases. Although AdBlue consumption increases slightly, the overall values remain in the positive.

At the end of a long working day, what counts for drivers like Michael is that the vehicle runs reliably, consumes minimal fuel and is as smooth as butter to drive. The D30 PowerLion delivers exactly that, allowing you to drive one of the cleanest and most efficient diesel trucks on the road.
