Beat Steinmann transports glass safely across Switzerland

Beat Steinmann embodies a generation of drivers who practise their profession with pride and professionalism. Even after 30 years on Swiss roads, he still feels at home in his MAN TGX – rolling proof of true passion.

When Beat Steinmann steers his MAN TGX through the narrow hairpin bends of the Swiss mountains, he feels at home – he has loved his job for decades. His entry into the world of truck driving could not have been more traditional. "Even as a little boy, I used to ride with my father", recounts Beat. What began as a child's fascination has developed into a 30-year success story for Beat on the roads of Switzerland.

As a self-employed driver, he always drove MAN – for him, they were the most reliable vehicles. “

Beat hails from a small village between Basel and Bern. He drives an MAN TGX 18.470 for the company Rö-Trans AG. He specialises in challenging glass transportation that requires maximum precision. "Every action counts with this freight. Everything has to be right, from securing the load to following a defensive driving style", he explains.

Specialist in fragile loads

The challenges posed by the fragile freight in mountainous Switzerland are many and varied: "Narrow access roads, little space for unloading and snow chains in winter – you have to know your trade", says Beat. The full-air suspension and remote-controlled steering of the semi-trailer are particularly important when things get tight.

No two days are the same. Sometimes Beat transports broken glass for recycling, other times he carries out complete glass installation work on construction sites. He particularly appreciates the versatility of his job.

I enjoy travelling through our country, along the lakes and over the mountain roads. The landscapes in Switzerland are really varied. “

Concentration is the order of the day

The Swiss trucker is always aware of the responsibility that comes with his job: "Between road traffic, crane work and working time regulations, you always have to be one hundred per cent on the job." A passion that Beat has successfully passed on – his son has already followed in his footsteps.

The driver observes with some melancholy how his profession is changing: "Unfortunately, the comradery among drivers is no longer as important as it used to be. Today, everyone works for themselves." Nevertheless, he looks back on his career with satisfaction.
