MAN Truck & Bus is one of Europe’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers and providers of transport solutions with annual sales of around € 14.8 billion (2023). The product portfolio includes vans, trucks, buses, diesel and gas engines as well as services related to passenger and freight transport. MAN Truck & Bus is a TRATON SE company and employs approx. 33,000 people worldwide.

Our strategy

The commercial vehicle industry is facing major challenges: In the future, vehicles will be more and more autonomous, connected and have lower emissions. We are seizing this opportunity to consistently realign our company. Our NewMAN strategy builds the foundation. It consists of the strategic thrusts “Robust Company”, “Smart Innovator” and “Strong Team” and sets the direction for the coming years. Our pole star is a fully autonomous, emission-free vehicle at the end of this decade.

What else is behind NewMAN?

At MAN, we want to create competitive and flexible structures in order to become and remain robust and resilient in times of crisis (“Robust Company”). We will focus clearly on the development of new technologies and rely on strong partnerships with TRATON and VW (“Smart Innovator”) in addition to our own innovative strength. We achieve this by each and every employee doing his or her part for the common success – as a “Strong Team”. Sustainability is also part of NewMAN as a decisive business driver of the future.

In 2022, for example, MAN has anchored the topic of sustainability in its corporate strategy and is committed to greenhouse gas total balance neutrality in 2050. The company has pledged to do this as part of the climate protection initiative Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The first step is to save 70 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) at global sites by 2030 (compared to 2019). The GHG fleet emissions per vehicle kilometre of trucks, buses and vans sold by MAN are to be reduced by 28% by 2030 (compared to the base year 2019). The most important component of the greenhouse gas reduction strategy is decarbonisation through electrification of the fleet. E-buses in various versions and vans with electric drives are already available to customers today. Series production of the heavy MAN eTruck will start in 2024.

Our current products and services

The portfolio starts with vans with a gross vehicle weight of 3.0 to 5.5 tonnes and ranges from trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 7.49 to 44 tonnes to heavy special-purpose vehicles with a gross train weight of up to 250 tonnes. As a full-range supplier, MAN thus covers all weight classes. In addition, the company manufactures city buses, intercity buses and coaches as well as bus chassis of the MAN brand, minibuses based on the van and luxury coaches of the NEOPLAN brand. Industrial engines for mobile and stationary applications far from and on the road and water, as well as extensive mobility-related services, complete the product portfolio.

Our research

MAN sees electric drive systems for commercial vehicles as the decisive factor on the road to locally emission-free, climate-friendly mobility. The strengths of electric vehicles are at their best in an urban environment. They are locally emission-free and thus contribute to improving the air. They are also significantly quieter. In terms of the variety of applications and possible body concepts, the future MAN eTruck is in no way inferior to today's diesel truck: the CO2-free long-distance transport of refrigerated foodstuffs will be just as possible as low-noise and emission-free waste disposal in the city or the fully electric transport of materials to the construction site.

In zero-emission technologies, we are clearly focusing on electromobility. Battery-electric drives are already holding their own in city centres, both for buses and in regional and distribution transport. From 2024, our new-generation eTrucks will be on the road. MAN sees hydrogen (H2)-based drive systems as a complement to purely battery-electric drive systems.

MAN Truck & Bus is also researching corresponding technologies in this area. Two technologies are currently being researched in pre-development projects: hydrogen combustion engines and hydrogen fuel cells. MAN’s tradition-steeped Nuremberg site will transform itself from a diesel engine plant to a production and development site for alternative drive systems as part of this transformation.

Autonomous commercial vehicles are leading to a radical transformation of the business model at our customers – automation is a game changer. That is why MAN develops and tests automated driving applications together with partners from science and industry. MAN will become a leading provider of intelligent and sustainable transport solutions.

Under the label “MAN DigitalServices”, MAN Truck & Bus offers customers tailor-made solutions in the field of digital innovations. This gives MAN customers real-time, location-independent access to vehicle data and analyses derived from it. This creates recommendations for action that are specially tailored to them and their vehicles.
