Every MAN marine engine is a one-off, manufactured to individual specifications. Handing the finished product over to the customer is always an exciting moment, because we in the testing department feel personally responsible for its quality. Simply meeting the customer’s expectations isn’t enough for us. We want to exceed them. And we give everything we’ve got to achieve the perfect outcome – even if that means clambering into the heart of an oily engine. The test bed is where we put the new engine through its paces to make sure it delivers the performance we expect. When the customer is delighted, we know we’ve done a good job – and that’s our reward.

People tell us time and time again that there’s no real alternative to a MAN engine. Only when we impose stringent quality standards on ourselves do we achieve outstanding results. We want people with the desire to reach their full potential.

I wanted to make an impact and see the tangible results of my work. So two years ago I left my job in consulting to join MAN Diesel, where I helped to set up a new department for organizational development. My team now optimizes different production processes at plants in Germany, Denmark and France. Right from the start I enjoyed the kind of benefits most people only dream of: autonomy, the freedom to make my own decisions, and a supervisor who allowed me to present my ideas at the most senior level. My team and I have achieved several improvements over the last few years, increasing productivity, reducing lead times and improving delivery performance. Now our know-how is in demand outside production too. If you make your ideas heard, you’ll make an impact. And at MAN, we’re always on the lookout for good ideas.

At the end of 2008 it was official: VW Truck & Bus in Brazil was made part of the MAN Group and became MAN Latin America. The announcement of this partnership caught us by surprise, and it really was an exciting moment for all of us. Right from the very beginning, we realized that this partnership would create synergies for future projects. MAN respected our work and history. Both companies have an open-minded business approach that respects their differences and profit from each other's experience – and this has already helped to bring about improvements in joint projects! At this moment, we are working together on projects aimed at introducing the first MAN products onto the Brazilian marketplace.

I am very confident that this exchange of experiences is going to reinforce the quality of MAN's products on a global scale. Companies that approach their business partners with an open mind and show them that their opinion counts will reap the rewards in the form of commitment.

I live for mechanical engineering. A good reason for applying to join MAN after obtaining my doctorate. I was on my way to the interview when I saw these impressive trucks and I knew at once: this is where I want to work. From that moment on I have been passionate about MAN. I decided to take part in the 15-month trainee program, where I was introduced to a large number of departments. Moreover, I was given the freedom to delve deeper into areas that I found especially interesting. For instance, I was allowed to tinker on the trucks myself in one of our service workshops. Shortly after my time as a trainee, I led a project that played a decisive role in shaping my professional career: using comparisons with the competition, we identified the potential for improvements in our products.

I have now been responsible for this task for almost three years and I am now in charge of a department with 10 employees.
